Here are my 13 top tips to start your sports team:

1. Know why you are starting a sports team

First, make sure you know why you are starting a sports team. Do you want to create a place for players to socialize and stay in shape? Is your priority to create opportunities within the local community, or are you aiming to run a team for profit? You need to know the reason you are starting your sports team, as each reason requires a different approach.

It’s important to have a passion for starting your own sports team, whatever your motivation is. By understanding the reasoning behind beginning a team, it can help you to remain more motivated and committed.

2. Select a sport

When you chose a sport, it needs to be something you know about it. This can be a sport that you really enjoy playing, or a sport that you think would be beneficial for your community as a whole. You can’t dedicate yourself to a basketball team if the only sport you know about is American football. It’s essential to understand the sport so you remain committed and so you have at least a basic understanding of how a team should run. Having this passion for the sport will help you to keep working hard, even when you face challenges. There are also other considerations that may impact the sport you choose, which will be discussed later in this article, including the cost of running a team and the popularity (as you will need players willing to join your team).

3. Sort out finances

Once you have decided on the sport you wish to pursue, you need to have a plan in place that helps you fund your team. Depending on the sport, the cost can vary on a large scale. Some sports such as football requires less equipment and investment, while others such as American football can be more costly to set up. The plan should include the cost of equipment, venues, game day staff, transportation, medical care and any other requirements.

Here are some of the ways that you can secure money to fund your team:

  • Donations
  • Membership fees
  • Sponsorship
  • Selling sports merchandize
  • Selling tickets
  • Getting a sports grant – American Football UK
  • Taking out a loan

4. Find a venue

When you have the plan in place to secure money for your dream, you need to find a suitable venue. Contact some of the local sports facilities and find out what cost is involved, as well as the process of using their venue. Also, find out availability, making sure there is free time for your team to use the venue for training and games. If your budget is low, it can be worthwhile to begin by using a park where possible, however this is not a long-term solution if your goal is to build a successful and recognized team.

5. Create a name

Now you know ways to help your team financially, you can move to some more fun parts of the process. Deciding the team’s name is important and you can take many approaches when choosing it. You can consider natural, regional characteristics, or you might have had a name in your head since you were a kid. When you name your team, the most important thing is that it must be memorable. If you associate it with a mascot, the name can support the visual identity of your team.

A mascot can differentiate your team from the others. You can use common names such as warriors, bears and lions, or even names that are associated with your regions, such as Ospreys etc. You can pair a location with a mascot. The main point is to remember to keep it short and to keep in mind what kind of image you want to project to fans and opponents. Your name will represent your sports team, so make sure it gets across any message you want it to.

Furthermore, you can choose a fun way of selecting a team. One of my previous clients came up with eight potential names, allowing fans and players to vote on their favourite team name. The winner was chosen as the team’s name, creating a feeling of community and togetherness, as well as pride.

6. Design a logo

Once you have decided on the name, it is time to consider the visual identity of your sports team. The logo design will be the first thing that anyone sees, requiring a professional appearance, as it will represent your team. It’s important to make sure that the logo and branding of your team are aligned.

A professional can design a sports team logo for you, helping your logo to stand out. This can be a worthwhile investment as it can help players and sponsors to take your team seriously and want to become associated with the team. It also means you can have a scalable logo in the required formats, allowing it to easily be embroidered on merchandise and clothing.

7. Create a website

Once you have your logo and the branding is in place, you can consider a website for your sports team. This will help your fans to connect with you, as well as allowing you to share relevant information in one place. Having this central hub of information and web traffic creates an opportunity to connect with potential sponsors and even showcase sponsors’ logos to give them brand exposure. A website can also be used to recruit new team members. If you don’t sell advertising on your website to sponsors, you can even place third party advertising on it, earning additional money for your team if you have a reasonable amount of traffic.

8. Find players

Players are essential to any team… after all, you need players to be able to play any sport. Thanks captain obvious! First, you can begin by recruiting within your community. Facebook is a great platform to help you find players for your sports team. You can ask your friends and co-workers to spread the word about the new team in the town, raising awareness of your team through networking. You can also run paid ads if you have enough budget, which can make the process quicker. If you are starting youth program or a sports team for kids, you promote it in the local schools. You might even benefit from putting an advert in the local newspaper or using community message boards.

Depending on the sport you chose, you will need a minimum number of players. The golden number is to have a minimum of 2 line-ups. Just for reference, if you want to start an American football team, you need minimum of 25 players to participate in a game, but this will be a very tough game for your players. It’s best to aim for more players than the minimum number, allowing you to make tactical changes and prepare in the case of players having family commitments, injuries or holidays.

9. Find coaches and people for the management

Finding the right staff is just as important as finding players for your team, if it not more important. The right people in management can make a huge different between success and failure of a team. Just because you have started a team, it does not mean you have to carry out every role yourself. In fact, having support from talented coaches and other staff allows you to concentrate on running the team while they take care of the areas they specialize in. It also means you will have support and can ask for advice, coming to decisions collectively if you prefer.

Appointing a head coach who has a relevant experience can set your team apart from the others, also helping to attract talented players and coaching staff. Make sure your coaching team are able to run sessions to highest standards while keeping the safety of the sports team at the top of their priority list.

10. Join a league

By this point, you should have a team in a development stage, as well as having enough players to play games. Now is the time to join to a league where your newly formed team can compete against other teams. This is an effective way to build relationships with other sports teams, start playing games and participate in tournaments.

To join a league, you need to search for an association of your chosen sports. Most of the associations have their own method of joining. Get in contact with them and they will be able to guide you through the process.

11. Promote your team

The next step is to promote your team. After all… a team without fans is just hobby. Actively promoting your sports team will make easier to connect potential sponsors, recruit new players and grow your reputation. Be active and approachable on social media and involve your followers, engaging them as much as possible. By doing this, you can build a solid following that can become your team’s ambassadors.

12. Order your uniforms and equipment

You have secured some sponsors through your promotions. Now is the time to order your uniform that your team can wear with proud and they can feel they are belonging to a successful organization and your sponsor might can appear on it. When you are ordering your uniforms, you need make sure the quality is top notch. The durability is an important factor as well as the price. The golden rule is to always have some sample when ordering as you cannot see the quality through the screen. Make sure you select the best possible provider for your budget and ask if there is a discount for bulk orders. You never know you might can save some money. Use the services of clothing specialists to supply and emblazon sports shirts, uniforms and other equipment.

13. Make sure you have enough time

One of the most important things to think about when looking to start a sports team is whether you have enough time. Even with coaching and management staff in place, you still have to dedicate time to your team. It’s most likely that you will need to play an active role in the smooth running of games and this requires time and effort. Without this, it can be incredibly difficult to find success. Make sure you have the time available to dedicate to making the team succeed, including training sessions, game days and the day-to-day management of the team. You must be 100% certain that you have the time and must be willing to put in 100% effort to make your team a success.
